Marione Lewers, a woman of middling socioeconomic status from the farming community of Rithorne in Ayr, finds her life entangled in the intricate web of 17th-century Scottish witch trials. Her relative affluence, indicated by her ownership of a horse and the possession of corn, stands out in the records, hinting at a life that afforded her certain comforts unusual for many of her contemporaries. However, this prosperity did not shield her from the period's pervasive fear of witchcraft, as Marione was named among a group of so-called "Dumfries delinquents" and summoned to the tolbooth—a central point of judicial process—for an examination of her alleged transgressions on April 9, 1658.
The trial proceedings, held in Dumfries, revealed a conspicuous lack of substantial evidence against Marione. The minister, whose endorsement of witness testimony lent it considerable weight, affirmed the truthfulness of the testimonies, yet no accusations were substantiated. Out of the 22 individuals who provided pre-trial statements, 15 men and 7 women, only 15—comprising 9 men and 6 women—appeared at the trial. These witnesses collectively professed ignorance of any wrongdoing on Marione's part. The absence of clear evidence or credible accusations led to a "Not Guilty" verdict, yet uncertainties remained, as her case continued to linger in the annals of Kirkcudbright records the following year, suggesting an enduring shadow of suspicion, albeit never realized in a subsequent trial.
