In his 41st year, Jon found himself at the heart of a serious accusation: participation in a witches' meeting. The allegations held grave connotations, pressing the boundaries between accepted folk practices and feared diabolical associations. Amidst the growing climate of fear and persecution, Jon fled the borders to England, a move that underscored the weight of the charges against him. This attempt at escape was swiftly countered by royal intervention; King Charles I, demonstrating the seriousness with which witchcraft was addressed, personally intervened with a directive to have Jon arrested and returned to Scotland.
Jon's trial in Edinburgh on March 26, 1631, concluded with a guilty verdict, sealing his fate. While details of the trial proceedings remain sparse, the court's decision reflected the period's harsh stance towards those accused of witchcraft. Sentenced to execution by strangulation and burning—a common punishment intended to deter both followers of alleged witchcraft and the community at large—Jon Neill met his end upon Castle Hill. His name persisted in other records, cited as a "Known Witch," which would echo ominously in the backdrop of Scotland's arduous witch-hunt narrative.
